The challenge

Being great at engineering isn't always enough to advance.

You write solid code. You ship. You contribute. But somewhere along the way you realize that career advancement isn't just about technical skill — and nobody has told you exactly what it is about.

The engineers who advance fastest aren't always the most technically brilliant. They're the ones who understand how their work connects to the business, how to communicate impact upward, how to build the right relationships, and how to make their growth visible to the people who make promotion decisions.

That's not insider knowledge — it's learnable. And having someone in your corner who has been on both sides of that conversation makes the path a lot clearer.

How do I advance?

What does it actually take to move from mid-level to senior, senior to staff, IC to lead — and how do you demonstrate you're ready?

What do leaders see?

What are managers and executives actually looking for when they evaluate who gets promoted, who gets stretch opportunities, who they invest in?

IC or management?

Should you pursue the management track or go deep on the IC path? How do you figure out which is right for you — before you make a move you regret?

"The engineers who advance fastest aren't always the most technically brilliant. They're the ones who understand the game — and play it intentionally."

What we work on

Career roadmapping

Build a concrete picture of where you want to go and the specific steps to get there — not a vague aspiration.

Visibility & impact

Learn how to make your contributions visible to the people who matter without feeling like you're playing politics.

Communicating upward

Talk to managers and executives in terms they care about — business impact, risk, tradeoffs — not just technical details.

Influence without authority

Drive decisions and direction on your team even when you're not the manager. This is what senior+ looks like.

IC vs. management track

Understand both paths clearly so you can choose the right one — and be intentional about how you pursue it.

Building your brand

Become known for something valuable inside and outside your organization. Your reputation compounds over time.

The inside view

What leaders are actually evaluating

After 25 years on both sides of performance reviews and promotion conversations, here's what I can tell you leaders are really watching for:

Ownership mentality. Do you treat problems like they're yours to solve, or do you wait to be told what to do? Leaders promote people who act like owners.

Scope expansion. Are you working at the level you're at, or are you already operating at the next level? The best way to get promoted is to already be doing the job.

Reliability under ambiguity. Can you navigate unclear requirements, shifting priorities, and incomplete information — and still deliver? That's senior-level behavior.

Multiplying others. Do you make the people around you better? At senior levels, your individual output matters less than your impact on the team's output.
